Herbert Gelhard devoted his entire life to art. As a young man he already draws and paints enthusiastically. During this time, he already created numerous early works. The earliest work documented in the collection is from 1949 and is characterized by high painterly, as well as creative quality.

Herbert Gelhard then took a completely different direction, studied law and became a lawyer in Wiesbaden. Even during this time he devotes every free hour to drawing and painting.

In 1979 he decides to give up his profession and devote himself entirely to painting. The artist continues to develop his techniques, attends courses and works out his own style autodidactically – free from the influences of modern styles and current art trends.
Gelhard sees the painter as a visionary, his models are the painters of classical modernism. Landscape painting, the portrait and the nude are his motifs, which he worked on until his death.
