Hans Walter Lämmerhirt was born on 4 February 1911 as the son of a musician in Hagen/Westphalia. He died on 5 April 1986 in Königstein/Ts.
1929 Studied fine and applied arts in Düsseldorf; Christian Rohlfs was his early teacher, Heinrich Campendonk his later one. Encounter with Emil Nolde.
1931 He painted stage sets as assistant to Egon Wilden and Josef Fenneker and attended the Folkwangschule in Essen. Until 1935 stage designer in collaboration with Egon Wilden, Paul Mehnert , Josef Fenneker. Commercial artist in the Rhineland and study trips abroad.
From 1937 he lived in Frankfurt am Main. From 1940 to 1945 he was a medical orderly in Norway and Russia; in 1946 he was imprisoned in France.
Returned to Frankfurt in 1947. Continued to work in the style of abstract expressionism and developed his own style of painting. He works as a freelance painter and graphic artist.
From the 1950s to the 1970s he also designed many, well-known advertising motifs and well-known poster/advertising motifs, among them the original drawing for the airline Swiss Air preserved in this collection: “You fly well with Swiss Air”.
In 1961 he exhibited for the first time at the Zimmergalerie Klaus Franck and the Galerie am Dom in Frankfurt and from 1962 to 1964 in Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Copenhagen and Zurich.
This was followed by solo exhibitions: in September 1964 in Novara, Galleria Ji Polledro; in October 1964 in Milan, Galleria Pater; in November 1964 in Venice; in December 1964 in Rome and in January 1965 in Florence, both at Galleria Numero.
Exhibitions in New York and London follow in February and March 1965.
