Fritz Zimmer received his training at the Strasbourg Art School and attended the Leipzig Academy for four years. After his studies he painted mainly in the surroundings of Cologne. Only a few works from this period have survived in the family.
After the end of the war he took a teaching position at the Cologne art school and was appointed professor there. Along the way he went on painting excursions to the surrounding area and to the German Alps.
He finally settled in Bad Wildungen, where he probably created most of his works.
Here he created oil paintings with motifs from the region. His etchings, which were also mostly from the region, however, found wider circulation. During the bombing raids during the Second World War, almost all of his copper plates were destroyed and only a few are still in the possession of his family.
