The artistic œuvre of Hermann Standl is complex and runs between the poles of abstraction and figuration. In his works he deals with the components of pictorial structure, color, form and space. His work can be located stylistically between the Neue Wilde, Concrete Art and Pop Art. His interest in art led him to study textile design at the Academy in Copenhagen in 1995. He remained there until 1997 and in the same year transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he studied under Professor Jürgen Reipka. This was followed by numerous exhibitions in museums and art associations on a national as well as international level and the inclusion of his works in art collections. At the beginning of his creative work, shortly after he left the art academy, he created the “Lattenbilder”.
On individual wooden slats Hermann Standl paints figures in a gestural manner, which lean on the Junge Wilden, coloring motifs from everyday existence. Preferred themes are the relationship of man to his environment and social issues that were topical in the 1990s post-reunification period.
In the style of Pop Art, Hermann Standl combines iconographic elements of Korean culture, such as the hummingbird, with landscapes familiar to us in Germany. According to the respective national culture – for example, the pink color stands for Korean cherry blossoms or a light blue for the pre-Alpine landscape – Herman Standl builds the coloring accordingly – into the picture composition. In the following years there is a break with the figurative way of painting, Herman Standl’s paintings now consist exclusively of geometric shapes and colors, which he combines and contrasts in different levels. It is always our perception to which he appeals, so deep landscapes, corresponding levels, new references between inside and outside arise in his works. He creates multiple levels of focus and changing positions in one image. It is a joyful and meditative look at the universe, the world that surrounds us.
