Ilse Hannes trained as a kindergarten teacher in Berlin from 1933 to 1936. During the Second World War she worked as an intelligence aide for the Wehrmacht, mainly in Norway. Here she met the artist Karl Walter Schmidt from Frankfurt am Main, through whom she turned to the fine arts.
She studied for a short time at the Kunsthochschule Kassel in 1951/52, attended courses with Johannes Itten and, after a longer period of study in Ticino from 1961 to 1963, trained at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter in Paris in 1963/64. During this time, the young artist repeatedly worked as an art teacher at various schools in North Hesse and Frankfurt. In 1984 she married Karl Walter Schmidt.
Ilse Hannes came to art relatively late due to the war. Nevertheless, she was able to consistently develop her artistic work over the long period of 60 years until immediately before her death. During a study visit to Paris she learned the technique of etching. Her work is characterised by small-format representations with a high degree of stylistic and creative diversity.
Remarkable are her collages, in which she takes up discarded objects as found objects and assembles them into artistic and peculiar creations of high poetic power.
Some works can be seen in the collection of the Neue Galerie in Kassel, the majority of her works are privately owned.
