Josef Witzel was a German caricaturist, illustrator, painter and poster artist.
Josef Rudolf Witzel received his training as a painter under Eduard von Steinle at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt and in Karlsruhe at the Grand Ducal Baden Art School under Caspar Ritter. In Munich, Witzel worked from 1890 as a staff member of the weekly newspaper Jugend, founded in 1896.
Witzel was a poster artist of the Jugendstil. He was also represented in Les maîtres de l’affiche, a subscription of contemporary posters published in France by Jules Chéret from 1895 to 1900. Witzel’s work can be found in many areas of illustration, caricature and the advertising poster.
