Walter Precher van Ed was a student of Ewald Karl Max Enderlein and Paul Rößler during his studies at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1948, he received the title of professor at the Berlin University of the Arts and was a professor at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1949 the artist had a solo exhibition at the renowned Galerie Henning in Halle/Saale. In 1961 van Ed was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nancy.

Paris, Prague and Dresden are among the focal points of his life. In Prague he met Oskar Kokoschka, and he became his master student. In Paris he was in close friendship with great artists he studied and painted, among them Fernand Léger, Jacques Villon, Maurice Utrillo, Jean Cocteau, Karel Appel.
His late Impressionist works made him famous at international exhibitions in New York, Paris, Nancy, Nice, Dresden, Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt.
